Out-of-District Coursework Policy
Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) supports student choice and academic growth by offering a process for students to request pre-approval for taking courses outside of the district to meet graduation requirements. To ensure alignment with state law and district policies, students may only take out-of-district courses if the equivalent SCUSD course is either not offered or is full at their school. A maximum of four such courses may be taken for graduation credit, and only courses from accredited institutions that are UC/CSU-approved or meet specific criteria will be accepted. Students and parents must complete and submit the "Out-of-District Course Approval Request" form, which includes principal/designee review and, in certain cases, approval from the Director of Secondary Education. Special considerations apply for 8th graders seeking math acceleration, requiring a meeting with the high school they will attend. SCUSD does not evaluate the curriculum of outside programs, so students are responsible for mastering skipped content—particularly in math and world languages. Additionally, SCUSD does not verify courses for NCAA eligibility, and students must independently confirm such alignment. Course enrollment within SCUSD is not guaranteed for students who fail to complete outside coursework successfully.
Out-of-District Coursework Guidelines
Who is Eligible?
Students may take courses outside of SCUSD only if one of the following applies:
- The course is not offered at their school
- The course is full
- The course is taken for enrichment purposes only
Students may earn graduation credit for up to four out-of-district courses, provided the courses are taken through an accredited institution and are UC/CSU-approved or meet district criteria.
Approval Process
Before enrolling in an out-of-district course:
- Students and parents/guardians must complete the Out-of-District Course Approval Request Form. Carefully read the guidelines listed on this form.
- The request must be approved by the Vice Principal and the Director of Secondary Education.
- After approval, students are responsible for completing the enrollment process with the outside institution.
Information for 8th Grade Students
If an 8th grade student plans to take a Math or World Language class for acceleration during the summer before 9th grade, special rules apply. Middle schools do not process the out-of-district course requests. Once the student is officially enrolled in high school, the high school will manage the approval process.
Important Responsibilities and Limitations
- SCUSD does not review or evaluate the curriculum of outside programs. Students are responsible for learning any content they may miss, especially in Math and World Language classes.
- SCUSD does not verify National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility.
- Enrollment in future SCUSD courses is not guaranteed if the out-of-district course is not successfully completed.
